GDR does not reject its predecessors. It inherits from each of them.
The critique of GDP has produced fifty years of alternatives, and locating GDR precisely against them matters more than claiming novelty. Each contributes something to the lineage. None of them, individually or together, provides a single instrument that works as both a national policy measure and a capital-market risk signal.
Human Development Index
The widest country coverage of any GDP alternative, and the source of GDR's within-pillar geometric mean. It contains no ecological pillar, and its income dimension remains a GDP-adjacent measure of output rather than resilience. GDR adds the ecological pillar, replaces income with a broader capital-resilience pillar, and extends non-compensability from within-pillar to across-pillar.
Doughnut Economics
Carries a genuine ecological ceiling and a social foundation, and is the framework closest to GDR on boundary logic. It is built to identify whether a boundary is being crossed rather than to produce a single figure a capital allocator can price.
Genuine Progress Indicator
Adjusts output for costs GDP ignores, which is the closest prior attempt at GDP's own unit of account. Its adjustments are partial on the ecological side and it has not achieved the country coverage or update cadence an index needs to function as a standard.
Social Progress Index
Measures social outcomes independently of income, deliberately excluding economic indicators. That independence is its contribution and its limit: it carries no ecological pillar and no capital dimension.
Why this one would fare differently
The adoption mechanism and the principal vulnerability are the same mechanism.
Gross National Happiness, the Human Development Index, the Genuine Progress Indicator, the Social Progress Index and Doughnut Economics all exist, several are decades old, and none displaced GDP. A reader is entitled to ask why this one would be different, and the answer has to be specific rather than aspirational. Each prior framework was addressed principally to governments as a normative alternative to GDP, and none had a pricing channel: no mechanism by which a change in the score altered the cost of capital for the entity measured. GDR is addressed to capital allocators and is constructed to have one. That answer carries a cost, and the cost is the same mechanism read from the other side. A pricing channel is also a gaming channel: an indicator that changes what an entity pays is an indicator that entity has a direct financial reason to manage rather than to report. The two claims belong together and should be read together. The restriction that follows is that self-reported scores are proposed as ineligible for spread-linked instruments.
